Thailand Day 12 - More of Pai and Day 13 - Travel to Chiang Rai

Day 12

Again we found scooters to rent for the equivalent of USD 3.25 a day per scooter.  We would not be traveling as far but still had some interesting stops on the agenda.  Our first stop was at a local farm where earthquakes over the past decade have caused a split in the land.  The small canyon that has been created is 25-30 feet deep at its greatest point.  Conveniently up the road was the Pam Bok waterfall.  We enjoyed some time there and Scott swam up to the waterfall.

To reach our next destination we had ot cross the Memorial Bridge so we stopped there briefly.  Immediately across the bridge we found a spot to stop for lunch.  2 bowls of beef noodle soup for approximately 1.50 USD satisfied our appetites and felt like a steal.  Carry-on we made our next stop at Tha Pai Hot springs.  The roughly 10 USD each to enter the hot springs reminded us that not everything in Thailand is nearly free.

After a couple hours had passed and the hot spring park had been explored, we made our way back toward Pai with one more stop in mind.  We stopped at the Container@Pai coffeeshop and enjoyed some iced coffees while relaxing in hanging baskets and taking in the view of the mountains.

We ate dinner at a small spot Tori had noticed and then found our way to the Spirit Bar.  The Spirit bar was an interesting place with live music and a chill hippy vibe.  We randomly met a couple from Finland who have recently moved to Pai to spend the next year out of the hustle and bustle of big city life.  A couple hours of conversation, a few more drinks and we moved down the street to the boom bar.  Much louder and much more crowded we took in the atmosphere for another round of drinks before saying goodbye to the Fins and calling it a night.

Day 13

Today was a travel day.  The first leg was back out the 762 curves from Pai to Chiang Mai.  At least nobody got sick today and miraculously the driver did not rear end anyone as he assumed his van was a scooter and wove through Chiang Mai traffic.  We grabbed some noodle soup at a stand by the bus station and an hour later were boarding our second leg to Chiang Rai.  Some construction and more traffic slowed us down and we finally arrived in Chiang Rai around 5:30.  After finding our hotel we found a taxi to take us to dinner.  Our first time in two weeks not having thai food and we found a sushi place that was very good.  To their detriment they offered all you can eat for 500 baht or roughly 18 USD per person.  We definitely got our moneys worth and there was look of fear in the owner's eyes as Scott continued to order more pieces.  We walked off the food coma and stopped by Chiang Rai's night bazaar.  Live music surrounded by many food booths which is then surrounded by rows of folks selling anything and everything.  Tori sought out dessert and we ended up with some delicious coconut and mango ice cream, Scott's served in half a coconut shell.  Stiff from the bus ride we stopped in for a couple massages, Tori taking a foot massage, and Scott the traditional Thai massage.  Not a bad way to end a travel day.
