Malaysia Day 8 - Penang National Park - SEAsia Day 73

We rented a scooter from our hotel in the morning and left Georgetown on route for Penang National Park.  We did a 5 mile round trip hike from the park entrance to a pretty but un-swimmable beach.  The hike took us up and over a large hill and the route featured monkeys, birds, and some other small mammal that we were unable to identify.  Arriving at the beach we walked along it for a bit then visited a small turtle sanctuary that is run by the Malaysian government to try and help revitalize several species of turtles.  The turtles lay their eggs on many of the Malaysian beaches and have done so for centuries.  The government is making a strong effort to find a balance between allowing people to use beaches without causing the extinction of certain species of turtle.

Finishing our hike we were back on the bike for another long trek across the island.  Our lunch destination was the famous Penang Air Itam Laksa which serves some of the best laksa in Malaysia. The laksa was delicious and cost only 10 ringgit (less than $2.50USD) for 2 of us.  After finishing lunch we walked down the street and got an ice cream bar before returning to the bikes for a short climb up to Kek Lok Si Temple which sits on a hill over looking the city.

We drove back across town to the Gurney Hawker Street food centre, an open air assembly of dozens of food vendors.  We enjoyed a couple dishes each before seeing an oncoming storm.  Quickly we went to the scooter and made it back to the hotel as the first drops started to fall.

Eventually the rain subsided and we wandered around the corner from our hotel to find a spot known for cheap beers.  We met some very friendly locals and had a couple more beers than originally planned.  A fun time and hopefully we can return at some point to visit their hometowns on the island of Borneo.
