Chile Day 5 - Santiago - Plaza Los Dominicos - Villa Grimaldi

We headed over in the morning to the Bolivian Embassy to get Tori's visa that will be needed in the near future.  Unfortunately we did not have all of the documents ready so we will have to return again.  From the embassy we jumped back on the subway and headed up to Plaza Los Dominicos.  At this plaza there is a wonderful setup for local artists to make and sell their handicrafts.  We perused through shops selling all kinds of wonderful pieces of art, hand made crafts, as well as a couple pet stores.  Some homemade ice cream sticks were enjoyed.

After tiring of the shops we summoned an Uber who took us over to Villa Grimaldi.  Villa Grimaldi was used as a prison and interrogation center during the regime of dictator Augusto Pinochet.  Thousands of people were interned at this place, kept blindfolded and tortured during their stays, with several hundred to "disappear" after their stay.  Another sobering reminder of what can transpire when human rights and dignity are disregarded in the name of politics and power.  The regime was far less gruesome than what occurred a decade earlier in Cambodia but Chile was also a much more stable country but the visit was still sobering none the less.

We returned to the city, picked up some groceries and cooked our own dinner for the first time in many months.
