Chile Day 26-27 - Travel and first day in Santa Cruz

Chile day 26 feb 19

We booked a bus around noon and headed a few hours south to the town of Santa Cruz in the heart of Chile's famous wine country.  After checking into the airbnb we wandered around the pretty little town and enjoyed a couple bottles of wine and some snacks.

Chile day 27 feb 20

Today turned into a longer day than expected.  We rented a couple of bicycles and set out to see a set of wineries about 10km out of town in the Valley of Colchagua.  After two kilometers on the bikes we knew we were going to be sore the next day as neither of us found the seats on the bikes comfortable.  On the plus side at least the bikes were the right size and in proper working order.

The first winery that we stopped at was Las Ninas.  We had a glass of Carmenere and enjoyed the view over the vineyards and the surrounding mountains.  The host was lovely and made sure we were happy.  We relaxed and had a few snacks soaking in the warm sunshine in the valley.  Soon enough we were back on our bikes and heading a short distance down the road to Vina Montes.  Vina Montes was a much larger winery than Las Ninas but the view of the valley was unbeaten.  We had a couple glasses here as the prices were very reasonable, and enjoyed roaming around the property.

The next stop on our self guided tour was at Vina Apaltagua a small winery that was very personal.  We enjoyed a tasting joined by one other guy from Germany and learned alot about the history of the vineyard, the history of the valley, and how wine tourism has been very beneficial to the town of Santa Cruz.  Following the tour we bought a bottle of their Carmenere, a varietal that is no longer able to be grown in Europe but has been sheltered from disease in Chile.

Our final stop of the day was at a very small winery that has been around since the 1890's.  They make only a small amount of wine every year as their tremendously old vines do not produce alot of grapes.  The Carmenere vines were planted in the 1930's and the Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the 1890's.  The history lesson we received during our tasting was very nice, and the vertical tasting showed a tremendous difference in the flavor and complexity of the wine between two different years.

The bike ride back was burdensome but eventually we made it.  We capped the day off with a pizza and then the bottle of Apaltagua Carmenere at our bed and breakfast.  Apart from the sore asses a great day in the Colchagua Valley.
