Day 41 - Wind Caves and Badlands National Parks

While making breakfast a herd of Bison appeared on the hills adjacent our campground.  Within 20 minutes they had passed behind the next hill, but their prescence made for a more memorable morning. Following breakfast, we headed to the Visitor centre and booked a spot for the 10:20 Fairgrounds cave tour.   This tour took us 250 feet down into the caves for a mile or so walk of some of the larger more accessible rooms in the cave complex.  Neither of us had any great ideas about what to expect but were both very happy with the experience and recommend others check out these impressive underground structures filled with a variety of water deposited natural features.

Following our cave tour we made lunch in the shade of one of the many large trees that surround the visitor centre parking lot, before setting out for Badlands National Park. A pitstop at McDonalds for a mcflurry, another hour in the car and we were at Badlands.  Shame on the French for not appreciating the beauty of this place, and hence giving the park its curious name.   The views from the overlooks were varied and complex, reminding us of some of the previous parks we had visited.

A few hours later we had passed through the park and set Google Maps to direct us to Sarnia.  The drive took all of the 17 hours google predicted, passing through the remainder of South Dakota, the width of Minnesota, bits of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
