Day 21 - Bryce Canyon National Park

We woke up early knowing that we had an hour drive to Kanab and had to arrive by 8:30 to be entered into the drawing for permits to visit the famous wave.  The wave is a rock formation found in the North Coyotes Buttes wilderness area that straddles the border of Arizona and Utah.  In order to protect the wilderness accredation of this area, only 20 permits are issued per day.  10 are handed out in a lottery 3 months prior, and 10 more are awarded the day prior.  At the BLM visitor centre in Kanab, we enterd into the lottery along with 60 other hopefuls.  The live drawing was held at 9 AM andwe manged to be the second number called.  So check back in tomorrow for photos of the wave.

Following the draw permits where handed out and a brief lecture on how to find the wave was given.   Excitement abound as we left the visitor centre and headed to McDonalds for a coffee and wifi in order to plan our stays for the next two days.

Coffee finished and we started the journey from Kanab to Bryce Canyon National Park.  I had been distracted previouslyby several signs advertising a German bakery some 60 and 45 miles away.  (the first sign was on route to Zion many days before).  The luck continued as we finally passed it.  A quick pit stop for some pastries and back in the car.

We made it to Bryce around 11 am and headed out for a 6 mile hike that we turned into 8.  this hike through giant sandstone hoodoos felt out of this world.   Again words cannot describe, pictures help just how magnificent these eroding sand structures are.

A hot hike finished, we showered and headed back to Kanab, less a detour thanks to brave stupidity believing google could find us a route across the Grand Staircase Escalante.

can you see the face?
