Bulgaria Day 6 - Plovdiv

We spent the day exploring Plovdiv today.  After grabbing a late breakfast/lunch at the Friends cafe we made a detour to the bus station to grab tickets to Instanbul for tomorrow.  With the heat of the day bearing down on us we continued our walk to the Ancient Roman theatre.  This is one of the best preserved roman theaters in the world and the site was impressive.  We continued our wanderings into three houses built in the early 19th century, the Balabanov House, Hindliyan House, and lastly the former home of Argir Kuyumdzhioglu which has been converted into a fabulous museum.  The Plovdiv Regional Ethnographic Museum gives an extensive look into the ethnography of the city and region of Plovdiv.  We were very pleased with the order in which we saw these houses as the history we learned culminated nicely.

From the museum we wandered over to a hilltop that gave us views over a large section of the city and its surroundings.  With the rain starting we found our way to a spot for dinner.  A lovely meal and happy to be inside out of the torrential downpour that was relentlessly pounding outside.  After 2 hours and with no break in the weather in sight we opted to try and get back to the apartment which was about a 15 minute walk from the restaurant.  Hiding under our umbrellas we were unable to stay dry as the water rushed along the road ways pooling up on some streets capturing cars whose drivers attempted to drive through.  Wet we eventually made it back, and spent the remaining evening indoors.  A crazy end to a good day.
