Turkey Day 4 - Istanbul - discovering neighborhoods

After another delicious breakfast we set out to walk along the water between two of Istanbul's many neighborhoods.  We ubered up to the Eyup Sultan mosque and hung around waiting for a boat to leave to get a better photo of the mosque and the bridge behind it.  Eventually we gave up and just took a photo with a ferry docked. From the mosque we walked along the water for a couple hours passing old wooden houses that at one point in time were on the waters edge.  We watched many men fishing in the river none catching anything larger than a few inches long.  After a sit in a park and a snack from a grocery store we decided to attempt to head across the city.

We caught a cab back to the ferry terminal in an effort to go visit the Asian side of Istanbul (Istanbul is divided across two continents).  When we arrived the throngs of people were nearly impassible.  Eventually we found the ferry we wanted to take but were unable to buy a pass to get on the ferry as all of the automated machines were sold out of rechargeable cards.  At least thirty minutes had passed in the end mass of people and it took us nearly another 30 to escape the ridiculousness of the ferry terminal.

Having abandoned our plan to take the ferry we pivoted and wandered up to explore the colorful Fener neighborhood.  Somewhat rough around the edges this neighborhood is quickly gentrifying in a unique and colorful way.  Many sidewalk patios and cafes converge in an area covering a few blocks and the creative of the turks is free to shine in this neighborhood.
