Peru Day 11 - Start the Lares Trek

We were picked up at 6:00 and drove to Calca where we visited the local market for breakfast and to pick up some candy and small toys to give to kids that we would meet in the small villages along the way.   The weather was pleasant today and we were soon at nearly 15000 feet cross in the Lares pass.  After stopping for a few photos at the pass we continued down to the small town of Lares where we would begin our two day trek through the valley.  We were introduced to the crew that would be taking care of us for the next couple of days before starting our trek at 11:30.  Our walk took us past hundreds of grazing alpacas and llamas as well as small family farms that were growing various varieties of potatoes, the only vegetable that grows well at this elevation.  After a few hours of hiking we reached a small lake where we were treated to a fine lunch in the dining tent.  We relaxed for a bit by beautiful little alpine lake and then restarted our hike up and over the harder route taking us up and over 15000 feet.  From the top of the pass we were treated to stunning views of valleys on both sides complimented by several more high altitude lakes.  We then descended down into the next valley where we would camp for the night.  Walking past a small settlement where a few families live as alpaca and trout farmers - they use one of the small lakes to farm trout.  We cleaned up a bit with a cloth and hot water before enjoying another well cooked meal and then retreating from the cold night air to our tents at about 8:30.  The night was clear and we were given a nice display of stars on the route from the dining shelter to our tents.
