Romania Day 1 - Bucharest

We were up at 5 in order to get to the airport in time for our flight to Bucharest.  The flight was uneventful and we arrived in Bucharest late morning.  We left our apartment and headed out to grab some lunch at nearby restaurant, Alt Shift.  After lunch we continued our walk around the city.  Our first stop was an attempted visit of the famous Palace of Parliament.  Unfortunately we were unable to go inside as they are currently holding meetings.  Next we walked towards old town and paid a quick visit to the Stavropoleous Church that is a beautiful combination of Brancovenesc, Oriental, and Italian Renaissance styles.

The next stop was for a tour of the Romanian kitsch museum.  This quirky place puts a light hearted spin on many of the unique aspects of life in Romania.  Covering topics ranging from Dracula, to life under the communist regime, through the rise in popularity of gypsy pop music (manele) the museum opened our eyes to an entire culture we knew little about.  Around the corner from the museum was a very instagram famous bookstore.  The people watching here was amusing and the building itself was beautiful.

A quick stop at a camera shop and then a walk past the gorgeous CEC palace bank before stopping for dinner across the street from our apartment.  A mad dash trying to avoid getting soaked was unsuccessful after dinner as an evening thunderstorm got the better of us. We wrapped the night up watching the final episode of Game of Thrones which despite some of the abbreviated plot lines was still enjoyable to watch.
