Romania Day 5 - Brasov and Peles Castle

We caught a morning train to the town of Sinaia and visited the lavish Peles Castle the former summer palace of the royalty of Romania.  Much more modern than the other castles in Romania this palace featured rooms and corridors decorated the most elaborate of designs from all of the surrounding areas.  Art and decor was collected from across Europe, northern africa, and the middle east to outfit this very impressive building.

Adjacent to Peles is the Castel Pelisor, the smaller design project of the former Queen Maria.  This house was their primary summary residence as the Peles Castle was often filled with visiting guests.  This was the dream home of the queen and she did a large amount of the selection of the interior design.  Complete with a painting room for her to paint, as well as well appointed rooms for the two teachers of their children.  Not as lavish as the Peles Castle it was still worth a visit.

After our palace visits we hiked further up and into Sinaia finding lunch at the very interesting Forest restaurant.  Unfortunately the service was slow and our food overcooked, but the ambience was unique.  We caught a train back to Brasov and relaxed for few minutes before heading out again for a walking tour of the old city of Brasov.  The tour took us from the main square past the black church and down rope road the third narrowest street in Europe.  From there we learned about the medieval fortification wall of which more than 50% is still standing before exiting the city gate into the old romanian part of town.  A stop at the romanian school (the first school in Romania) and the adjacent orthodox church, before ending the tour next to the monument of the unknown solider.  A worthwhile walking tour which packed in a lot of history.   A memorable way to end our time in Brasov.
