Romania Day 6 - Sighisoara and Biertan

We caught a morning train to Sighisoara.  This ancient city features a fortified citadel on top of a hill.  Within the citadel the cobblestone streets are lined with colorful houses under the imposing church perched at the highest point.  A large city hall, and many watch towers make up the perimeter of the fortification.  Settlement in the area dates back far beyond the citadel as pottery has been found and dated from as far back as 2000 BC.

After arriving in the city and checking into our accommodation we grabbed a quick lunch and toured out to one of the UNESCO protected medieval fortified churches in the area.  The church at Biertan impressed us and our driver gave us an informal tour and history of the town and church.  We were impressed by the very intricate lock that protected the valuables room.  This lock controlled 19 pins all by one key.  The craftsmanship is astounding given its age.

Following our visit of Biertan we did a quick pitstop in the much smaller town of Richis before returning to Sighisoara.  Our driver took us up to a hotel that has a fantastic vantage over the entire city.  The weather was perfect at this time and we thoroughly enjoyed our views.

We returned to town and walked up to the church on the hill and through some of the streets.  A very pretty and unique fortified citadel that we are happy to have visited.

The divorce room.  If you wanted a divorce you had to spend two weeks in this small room with your wife, apparently only one divorce ever went through in over two hundred years of this ridiculous practice.
