Peru Day 5 - Colca Canyon

At 3 am Scott and Sean were picked up from the hotel in Areqipa for a multi hour van ride to visit Colca Canyon.  Colca Canyon is the deepest canyon in the world and the hike in and out of it is quite steep and challenging.  The upper rim of the canyon is around 14000 feet in elevation while the oasis in the bottom that the trek visits is around 11000.  After a stop for breakfast the tour continued to the famous Condor Lookout.  Condors are one of the largest birds in south america featuring a wingspan in excess of six feet.  An endangered species the government of Peru is working hard to create healthy and safe environments for these enormous birds.  After watching the birds for a little while we were back in the van on route to the trailhead.  At approximately 10am we started the hike and climbed down taking in beautiful views for the next few hours.  Eventually we reached the river at the bottom, crossed a bridge, and stopped for lunch at a small family run establishment next to the river.  A few more hours of slight up and down deep in the canyon, plus a break at a guinea pig farm, we reached the oasis and our very basic accommodations around 5pm.  A couple beers were had with dinner and we were in bed around 8 as we had to be on the trail by 3:30 for the hike out of the canyon.

Tori's day was a stark contrast, sleeping in before exploring the coffee shops of Arequipa.  A couple days of necessary recharge before the upcoming couple weeks of more intensive site seeing.

From a parasite that grows on cactii, if you press it this deep blood red color comes out.  They used this to dye clothing.
