Peru Day 16 - More Arequipa

We had breakfast at the hotel and then picked up our laundry.  Our first stop of the day was a visit to the Museo Santuarios Andinos.  This museum is famous for the Juanita mummy who was found in 1995 at over 16000 feet on Ampato mountain.  Unfortunately the mummy was not on display as it was away for annual restoration work but we saw another famous Inka mummy Sarita.  The children were sacrificed to appease the gods and were only uncovered by a nearby erupting volcano which caused nearby mountain topping glaciers to recede.

We continued our day by doing some souvenir shopping at a couple of local markets before grabbing some crepe's for lunch.  Mandy wanted to do a Peruvian cooking class so we all joined in on the fun and made a couple of traditional dishes including an appetizer of Causa and a main of lomo saltado.

Full from feasting on our cooking we visited La Catedral, the only cathedral in South America to stretch the entire length of the main plaza.  This huge cathedral was originally constructed in 1656 before burning in 1844.  After being rebuilt it was devastated again in 1868 this time by an earthquake.  Once again its members rebuilt it and is now one of less than 100 basilicas in the world to fly the Vatican flag.

The day ended with a beer run and watching the opening episode of the final season of Game of Thrones.
