Once again we found our way onto a tour of a couple of the islands of Lake Titicaca. Today started with the man made reed based Uros islands that are home to some 3000 people. These islands are made by digging out reeds and the top layer of roots in roughly 1 m cubes before tying them together. Once tied together the reeds continue to grow which joins the cutout cubes. After a few months the newly formed floating platform is able to support weight. The platform is covered with cut reeds in a criss crossing fashion to add more support and cushion. These platforms typically will last for 10-15 years before needing to be replaced. After spending about an hour and taking a short boat ride on a reed built boat we left the very touristic Uros islands and continued our tour over to Taquile Island. Taquile is an actual island and we realistically could have spent a couple of days exploring its towns. We were treated to a traditional dance at the end of lunch and spent a couple hours exploring a bit of the island. Overall a worthwhile trip.
Well we had one incredible year of travel over the latter half of 2018 and the first of 2019. We will continue to use this to post on other places we find ourselves lucky enough to explore as part of our return to normal life.
